Imperial Sugar Company has committed $75,000 toward building a full-service, family waiting area at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where its employees were treated after the 2008 refinery explosion in Port Wentworth, Ga.

Architectural rendering of the new Family Respite Care Center by Hussey, Gay, Bell, and DeYoung.

The new Family Respite Care Center will serve family members of trauma victims and critically ill patients, offering them overnight accommodations and other services.

The new facility is “the vision of Rusty and Coren Ross,” whose daughter, Jennifer, died in 2006, according to the medical center. Imperial Sugar’s contribution is part of $500,000 being raised for the project.

“Memorial University Medical Center provided for our employees in a time of urgent need,” says George Muller, vice president of administration at Imperial Sugar. “We want to give back to help ease the burden of those who will come here in the future.”

Donald Farmer, an Imperial Sugar employee injured in the explosion, spoke at a groundbreaking ceremony. Farmer told WSAV TV: “I survived a very horrendous accident, and every day, I thank the Lord for me being here.

“When I came through here, they treated me with care. Everybody seemed to know exactly what they were doing.”

Farmer said he is pleased to know that families using the new respite center will be well taken care of – just as loved ones are who undergo treatment at the medical facility.

Memorial University Medical Center is a 530-bed, academic medical facility that serves a 35-county area in southeast Georgia and southern South Carolina, offering a Level 1 trauma center.

The 4,000-square-foot expansion project will include a kitchen, dining area, washer/dryer, showers and 10 private rooms. It is expected to be finished in several months.

Legacy Community Health Services, a nonprofit organization with four locations in Houston, provides low-cost or no-cost primary medical, dental and wellness treatment to more than 4,000 people each month. Most of the patients lack medical insurance or any other ability to get needed medical and dental care. Unlike general hospital emergency room environments, Legacy focuses on personalized individual or family medical treatment.

Imperial Sugar Company’s President and CEO John C. Sheptor is among community leaders who lend their professional expertise, time and support to Legacy’s Board of Directors.

New Orleans chef, well-known personality and Imperial Sugar friend – Charles Pizzo – shares his thoughts about southern Louisiana food and details of his favorite recipe … Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Berry Sauce.

by Charles Pizzo

Chef Charles Pizzo's pork with berry sauce

Growing up in Louisiana spoiled me. People here take their food seriously, a legacy we attribute to the early French settlers. We care about freshness, flavor, and local ingredients. Blessed with an abundance of sunshine and water, the fertile delta of the Mississippi River produces a bounty of crops, wild life and seafood.

In this languid part of the world, the night air is often sticky. People pass the time cooking and stirring, laughing and sharing. It’s not uncommon to eat one meal while discussing the merits of the last – or plans for the next. Food is part of the culture.

Outsiders often make the mistake of thinking that everything we prepare is spicy and hot. That’s probably because most people only know about Cajun cookery. Our harvest includes sugar and rice in great quantities too. Dishes like calas – fried rice cakes dusted with powdered sugar – and pralines – a confection made of cooked sugar, butter and pecans – also figure prominently on the local palate.

Charles Pizzo

At Mardi Gras, a fanciful street celebration just before Lent, the kings of two of the most prominent Carnival krewes – Rex and Zulu – meet and pay homage to one another. And so it is on the plate, where flavors often meld like rifts of jazz music. “Sweet and hot, that’s the favorite local flavor,” the late Chef Warren LeRuth once told me. “It makes your taste buds dance because it’s more than one note.”

That’s probably why Imperial pure cane sugar is a staple in my kitchen. Just a little bit added to savory foods makes all the difference in the world. It’s a natural flavor enhancer that brings out the lagniappe – a little something extra – in many dishes.

Though I didn’t always know why, there is some science behind it. Meats brined in sugar and salt stay moist and flavorful. Dry spice rubs with sugar enhance the browning of meats and improve their taste. Tossed with vegetables, the legendary taste of Imperial pure cane sugar produces a light glaze that seals in flavor.

Sugar is wholesome – just a pinch will make you pinch yourself when you taste your cooking. That’s one of the secrets of Louisiana cooking: sugar and spice – it makes everything nice.

Recipe: Grilled Pork Tenderloin with Berry Sauce

BRINE FOR PORK

1	tbls	Imperial pure cane sugar
1	tbls	salt
1	cup	cold water
1-2	medallions pork (tenderloin or loin, boneless)

1.	In a bowl, combine sugar, salt and cold water; mix to dissolve.
2.	Add medallions into brine.
3.	Soak (marinate) for 15 – 60 minutes.
4.	Remove from brine and pat dry; set aside.

DRIED BERRY SAUCE

¼	cup	dried fruit, any (ex: blueberries, cranberries, etc.)
½	cup	hot water
1	splash brandy (optional)
1	tsp	Imperial pure cane sugar
¼	tsp	salt
½	tbls	white vinegar

1. In a bowl, combine the dried fruit, hot water and (optional) brandy.
2.	Soak the fruit for at least 30 minutes. Drain; reserve the liquid.
3.	In a small skillet, add the strained soaking liquid.
4.	Bring to a boil; add sugar and salt.
5.	Lower heat and reduce by half; remove from heat and swirl in the vinegar.
6.	Add soaked fruit and toss lightly.

GRILLED PORK

1-2	medallions brined pork (tenderloin or loin, boneless)
1	tbls	cooking oil (canola or vegetable)
1	dash	salt
1	dash	pepper

1.	Brush the pork with oil on both sides.
2.	Season to taste with salt and pepper.
3.	Pre-heat a grill plan, grill or sauté pan to seal juices into the meat.
4.	When water dances on the pan, add the pork.
5.	Cook to the desired doneness (medium well works best; avoid overcooking)
6.	Remove from heat.

SESAME SNOW PEAS

1	cup	snow peas, fresh (approx. 2 – 4 oz.)
1	tbls	oil (canola or vegetable)
1	drop	sesame oil
¼	tsp	Imperial pure cane sugar
1	dash	salt
1	dash	sesame seeds (optional)

1.	Wash the snow peas; pat dry.
2.	Pre-heat a wok or skillet on medium-high heat.
3.	Add cooking oil to the pan plus one drop sesame oil.
4.	Toss in snow peas, sugar and salt.
5.	Stir or toss to coat snow peas and stir-fry for 4-6 minutes until al dente.
6.	Add sesame seeds to toast (optional) and cook 30 seconds more.
7.	Remove from heat.

The sun could not outshine the bright smiles and colorful lemonade stands manned by young entrepreneurs celebrating Lemonade Day in the Houston area on Sunday, May 2. An estimated 50,000 future CEOs set up lemonade stands … with families, neighbors and friends supporting their learning endeavors.

A young lemonade entrepreneur listens to John Sheptor, CEO of Imperial Sugar, discuss the Four P's of Marketing; Product, Price, Place and Promotion. Lemonade Day Founder Michael Holthouse (center) listens.

Lemonade Day has become a nationwide event, offering children an opportunity to experience the benefits of business ownership and to give back in their community. A portion of sales will benefit the young entrepreneurs’ favorite charities.

John Sheptor, chief executive officer of Imperial Sugar – Lemonade Day’s title sponsor – toured several lemonade stands throughout the city with a group that included Astros legend Jeff Bagwell and Michael Holthouse, co-founder of nonprofit Prepare 4 Life and creator of Lemonade Day. Sheptor was impressed to see participants as young as age seven, executing savvy techniques to attract customers and make sales.

“I could tell these children were really prepared. To hear them describe how much fun it was to collaborate with mom, dad or other family members to set goals and plan strategy was phenomenal,” said Sheptor. “It’s the spark that transforms and inspires the young to dream bigger dreams and creates memorable moments for the entire family. “

Youngsters staked an estimated 15,000 lemonade stands in high traffic locations across different parts of Houston and surrounding counties to sell their tasty drink recipes, including Uptown Post Oak, Third Ward and Missouri City. One team of young girls, with a stand in Memorial Park, chanted a ‘lemonade rhyme’ while playing patty-cake that attracted joggers who became buyers. Even Houston Mayor Annise Parker got in on the fun offering encouragement while visiting youth stands inside the Galleria.

Alexis Cross prepared a clever marketing promotion for her lemonade by dressing as an Imperial Sugar bag.

Eleven year-old Alexis Cross’s borrowed her grandmother’s old family recipe, but after checking out previous year’s event, knew she needed a competitive edge. She worked with her mom to design the perfect marketing aide: an Imperial Sugar bag costume that included a bar code on the side, and a family cake recipe on the back. A hat with tentacle-like branches with lemon roots was a unique feature and completed her look.

“I knew there would be a lot of cute kids entering the contest and I wanted to stand out,” said Cross. Cross will use a portion of her drink sales to purchase food items for single military moms.

For 12 year-old Lydia Mendez, two-time winner of the best tasting lemonade competition, her involvement in Lemonade day was personal as well as profitable. Sporting a bright-colored t-shirt, Mendez smiled sweetly as she offered customers choices one of two different flavored lemonades.

“This year I changed up my recipe using a variety of fruits to give it a special taste,” said Lydia. “Ten percent of my profits will go to breast cancer research. My grandmother and aunt were both diagnosed with cancer and this is how I want to help.”

“Lemonade Day is an event that speaks to the community’s desire to help children succeed by introducing them to business,” said Holthouse whose nonprofit organization provides after-school programs in seven inner-city Houston middle schools. “It’s a simple concept that with nurturing, support and collaboration, can have the greatest impact upon our children’s future.”

The contest, which kicked off festivities a week before the national, community-focused Lemonade Day, was judged by local celebrities, led by Astros baseball legend Jeff Bagwell. Houston-based Chef Eddy Van Damme also served as a judge.

The nearly 30 contestants were randomly selected from early Lemonade Day registrants throughout the Houston community.

Nine winners captured first, second and third places for the best tasting lemonade, most unique lemonade and healthiest lemonade.

“The creativity was amazing,” said Julie Eberly, executive director of Prepared 4 Life, which coordinated the event. “The kids really outdid themselves.”

Alexis Cross is one enterprising contestant, dressed as an Imperial Sugar bag ... sweet!

Representing Imperial Sugar as title sponsor of Lemonade Day, Muller joined Eberly and Bagwell in a visit to each contestant’s stand. Muller said one 11-year-old was dressed up in an Imperial Sugar bag that featured a complete label with recipes. “I was really impressed. The kid’s enthusiasm and originality was exceptional.”

Local TV stations ran segments covering the contest and the upcoming main event. Click here for coverage by KIAH-TV.

Lemonade Day is a free, community-wide, educational initiative designed to teach children how to start, own and operate their own business. Kids of all ages learn to set goals, develop a plan, secure an investor, create a product, make a profit and give back to their community.

On Sunday, May 2, thousands of young entrepreneurs will set up their lemonade stand businesses in Houston and in 13 other cities across the country. The kids get to keep the money they make and are encouraged to save a little, spend a little, and share a little with the community. For more information, visit www.LemonadeDay.org.

Lemonade Day is just around the corner and Imperial Sugar Company is getting into the swing of things once again as title sponsor.

In its fourth year, Lemonade Day is a national, community-focused event that teaches children how to start, own and operate their own businesses by setting up lemonade stands. Thousands of lemonade stands are expected to dot the country in 14 cities on Sunday, May 2.

“Lemonade day will include the participation of 150,000 children in Houston, alone, each with a caring adult supporting them and the purchasers of over 3 million glasses of lemonade, said John Sheptor, chief executive officer of Imperial Sugar Company. “Children from all types of home conditions will enjoy their first experience in business, many of which will have a transformational event that will change the direction of their lives.

“They will execute their business plan, market their product, change their direction in response to customer interests, financially account for their business performance and share their earnings with those less fortunate. Most will never have earned their own money and they will begin to believe in their future – hope for a life different than they currently face. Lemonade day is a life moment for many children inviting them into a much brighter future.”

Lemonade Day originated in Houston in 2007 and is being replicated in many other cities. Nearly 27,400 youth registered for lemonades stand last year.

The creator of Lemonade Day is Michael Holthouse, who also is co-founder of Prepared 4 Life, a non-profit organization providing after-school programs in seven, inner-city Houston middle schools.

Last year's Lemonade Day winner Diane Hoff (center) and her family won a trip to Washington, D.C., and dinner at the home of Imperial Sugar CEO John Sheptor and his wife Tiba.

“This is a day that has forever changed lives and given thousands upon thousands of children hope for today and tomorrow,” said Holthouse. “But, we recognize that the success of this effort is dependent upon so many businesses and individuals. We are truly honored and humbled by the commitment of Imperial Sugar, who as a committed corporate citizen, understands the role they play in helping the youth of tomorrow.”

Sales for last year’s event totaled just over $2.2 million. From those proceeds, the young entrepreneurs chose to give back $500,000 to their favorite charities.

The Black Expo is the largest event of its kind that directly targets the African-American community. It provides African-American-owned businesses the opportunity to showcase their products and services to the public and procurement officers from major corporations and government entities.

Savannah, Georgia, got a glimpse recently of future civic and business leaders at the First Annual Greater Chatham (County) Junior Miss program, staged to acknowledge outstanding youth in the community for their academic and talent achievements.

Greater Chatham Junior Miss (GCJM) is a scholarship program for high school junior women students from all racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds who attend public and private schools in Savannah and the surrounding counties. The goals are same as Georgia’s Junior Miss and America’s Junior Miss programs – to recognize and reward the most outstanding young women in the community.

The 2010 Chairperson was Sondra Barnes, sister of Eric Barnes who perished in an accident at Imperial Sugar’s refinery near Savannah in early 2008. The company donated $10,000 to sponsor the event in memory of the Savannah sugar refinery associates who were lost or injured in the accident.

Other sponsors included Bahama Joe’s, City of Savannah, and Mickey Rountree Insurance Agency.

There were a dozen 2010 GCJM finalists at the event, held April 3 at the Sol C. Johnson High School in Savannah, along with an audience of about 200 parents, relatives and local dignitaries including Savannah Mayor Otis S. Johnson; Mistress of Ceremony and Former Georgia State Senator/Georgia State Representative Regina Thomas; and George Muller, vice president for administration at Imperial Sugar Company.

Winners were selected from a five-step process that includes scholastics, interview, fitness, talent, and self-expression. The top 2 winners received a $2,500 cash scholarship. Other scholarship prizes included, $1,000 – First Honoree, $750 Second Honoree, $500 – Spirit of Junior Miss, $250 – “Be Your Best Self” essay, 2 Fitness Awards – $250 each, 2 Interview Awards – $250 each, 2 Scholastic awards – $250 each, 2 Self-Expression awards – $250 each and finally 2 Talent awards – $250 each.

Imperial Sugar’s Muller had the honor of presenting a special medallion to each of the two grand prize winners – Catherine Mulligan from the Savannah Arts Academy, whose career goal is to work in fashion design or natural medicine, and Samantha Georgina Schikowski, a student at Sol C. Johnson High School, whose ambition is to pursue a career as a psychologist.

In reality, all the young women were winners. The program laid the foundation for future Greater Chatham County Junior Miss programs.

Like many charitable organizations, the San Jose Clinic in Houston, Texas, largely depends on volunteers to keep it running. Operated by the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, the clinic has been providing healthcare and health education to economically disadvantaged individuals and families in the Greater Houston area since 1922.

Imperial’s Mike Bentley (L), senior manager of infrastructure and Rick Fitzjarrell, computer operations manager, installing wireless network at Houston's San Jose Clinic.

Executives from Imperial Sugar Company took an interest in the clinic’s work during a tour of its facilities and offered to help in any way they could.

That offer paid off for the clinic when it recently moved to a new location in town.

Help came in the way of technical expertise from Imperial’s Mike Bentley, senior manager of infrastructure and Rick Fitzjarrell, computer operations manager for the company.

Bentley and Fitzjarrell essentially got all of the clinic’s computer work stations up and running, networking more than two dozen desktops, several printers and servers. The pair also installed several wireless access points in the ceilings on two different floors … no small task.

“There’s only one of me here, so Mike and Rick’s help really made a difference,” said Joe de la Garza, information systems manager at San Jose Clinic. “They saved us a lot of time. They knocked out every single computer, printer and wireless access point in one day.”

“We enjoyed it; it was fun,” said Bentley. “It came naturally to us since we deal with this kind of thing in our Imperial Sugar work.” According to Bentley, this may be the first of more volunteer visits to come.

Imperial also donated a pallet of sugar to the clinic for its “Lunch and Learns,” periodic luncheons where members of the community can learn more about the facility and the programs it offers.

When David Reynaud steps outside his office at the News Examiner in Lutcher, Louisiana, to catch a quick smoke, he can hear the sound of massive steel pilings being driven into the ground.

That sound is coming from the new sugar refinery being constructed in the neighboring town of Gramercy.

David Reynaud, editor of the St. James Parish News Examiner.

“People in town are starting to talk as they see signs of construction,” said Reynaud, who is editor for the News Examiner. “They’re starting to get interested now that they actually see some work getting done.”

The new refinery being built will be owned and operated by Louisiana Sugar Refining, LLC, a joint venture among Sugar Growers and Refiners, Inc., Cargill and Imperial Sugar Company. Imperial expects it will strengthen the sugar cane industry in southern Louisiana and bring an economic boost to the region.

Sugar refining is not new to these two towns separated by a single street and situated along the banks of the Mississippi River just 45 miles northwest of New Orleans. Many of the combined 6,000 townspeople grew up with the old Colonial refinery, as they still call it, which was founded in the 1890s along with the surrounding town of Gramercy.

The old refinery has been run by several companies since – including Colonial Sugars starting in 1902 – and is now owned and operated by Imperial Sugar.

Reynaud, who also edits the The Enterprise in Vacherie across the river, was born and raised in Gramercy. He said many of his friends’ fathers have worked at the Gramercy refinery.

“It’s been an important facility in the upbringing of people around here. My Godfather’s father was a Colonial plant manager. A lot of my high school friends used to work there in the summer to make a little extra money.”

While Reynaud, 32, is admittedly a relative newcomer to much of the area’s history, he believes the new refinery is a plus for Gramercy and Lutcher.

“Any time you can start new construction and bring in some new jobs, that’s always good. It makes people feel a little more secure when things are improving.”

Lutcher and Gramercy are located within St. James Parish, total population of 21,000 and home of many sugar cane farming families.

Dale Hymel, president of St. James Parish since 1992, has family that continues to farm sugar cane today.

Dale Hymel, president of St. James Parish since 1992, has family that continues to farm today. “All the sugar cane that you can see from the Gramercy refinery is still grown and harvested on the property my family owns.”

Currently, that’s about 2,000 acres, 800 of which the family purchased from one of the past owners of the existing refinery.

Hymel said his grandfather started the family’s sugar cane business. “I drove him through the sugar cane fields so he could inspect the crops. I started driving tractors on my own when I was ten years old.”

After working in the cold weather and rain during the harvest season, Hymel made the decision to go to college.

He thinks the new refinery is a “win-win situation for farmers and consumers” and will continue to provide a solid source of employment for parish residents.

Gramercy’s mayor, Herman Bourgeois, hopes the new refinery brings additional jobs to the community.

Gramercy’s mayor, Herman Bourgeois, hopes the new refinery brings additional jobs to the community. “We’re always looking for progress. We’re always looking to keep our people employed. And we welcome a good neighbor, just like Colonial has been for many years for the town of Gramercy.”

Part of that progress will come in the refinery’s state-of-the art equipment and automated processes, which the Mayor believes will be safer for members of the community who work there.

“We support cane farming here in St. James Parish. It’s one of our major industries. The old refinery has employed a lot of local people in communities from the river parishes. And we’re just tickled to death to have an expansion and a good, permanent employer in Gramercy.“

Lloyd Kliebert started working at the old refinery 41 years ago. He is currently a maintenance coordinator at the plant for Imperial Sugar Company and president of Local 1167-P UFCW. The plant currently has about 275 Imperial employees and 190 contractors.

“I still have a lot of questions,” Kliebert said. “My hopes are that the new refinery will be something good for the community, something good for the town and the workers who put their lives into this refinery.

“I still have a lot of questions,” Kliebert said. “My hopes are that the new refinery will be something good for the community, something good for the town and the workers who put their lives into this refinery. And if not for themselves, then for their families. It’s something that’s been handed down from grandfather to father to son.”

Case in point, Kliebert’s father started work at the refinery in the 1940s, and now he has two of his own sons there.
Kliebert, who will be 62 in May, also was born and raised in Gramercy. “I’ve been living here all my life. I live two streets away from the refinery. My mom lives one street closer. In fact, she can sit on her porch and watch the new refinery being built every day.”

The new million-ton-per-year sugar refinery is expected to bring more than 500 construction jobs as well as new plant jobs to the Gramercy area.

Groundbreaking is set for Wednesday, February 3. Representatives from Sugar Growers and Refiners, Cargill and Imperial Sugar will be joined by local, state and congressional officials.

While New York City has a giant glittering ball that drops at the stroke of midnight, Sugar Land rang in 2010 with sweeter style … by dropping a sugar cube.

Imperial Sugar CEO John Sheptor and his wife Tiba.

Sugar Land was officially incorporated on December 29 1959, New Year’s Eve. And, the community this year has been reflecting of the phenomenal growth and prosperity over the last half century.

One of Sugar Land’s more prominent and long-time landmarks has been the headquarters of Imperial Sugar Company, one of the nation’s largest pure cane sugar companies. Many of Imperial Sugar’s employees and leaders participated in the 50th anniversary New Year’s Eve party, including President and CEO John Sheptor and his wife, Tiba.

Entertainment never before seen in Sugar Land showed up in the Town Square to help ring in the New Year, including a “living” Roman fountain, roaming stilt dinosaurs and an intriguing candy sculptor to name just a few.

Highlight of the New Year’s Eve celebration was unveiling of a memorial sculpture depicting the history of Sugar Land, including its origin with the construction of the first Imperial Sugar Company production facilities and employee houses dating back to 1843.

Among all the glorious traditions and symbols of the holiday season is the reminder of sharing and reflection upon those in our communities who might be in need of a helping hand. At Imperial Sugar’s headquarters at Sugar Land, Texas, many staff members volunteered extra time this holiday season to bring the spirit of sharing alive through a charity committee.

Various associate events at Imperial Sugar Company – such as cook-offs and bake sales – raised more than $4,600. The company kicked in additional funds to bring the total to $8,000.

The annual Giving Tree tradition at Imperial Sugar collected over 125 gifts that were presented to needy recipients at local rehabilitation and care centers, including Richmond Health Care Center and Park Manor of Quail Valley.

The company took part in the annual Share Your Christmas Food Drive donating several hundred 4-pound packages of sugar to the East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry.

From everyone at Imperial Sugar Company … Happy Holidays!
