The Savannah area is known for its Southern charm and hospitality, superb Southern cooking, enchanting streets and boulevards lined with live oak trees draped with Spanish moss, lovely old architecture … and azaleas.
The abundance of azaleas creates stunning views of flourishing public garden squares, glimpses of romantic private gardens nestled behind brick walls and iron gates and, not surprisingly, of Imperial Sugar’s large, state-of-the-art pure cane sugar refinery at nearby Port Wentworth, along the Savannah River.
The lane leading from the entrance to Imperial Sugar’s refinery on U.S. highway 17 into the plant is lined with large azaleas in full bloom each Spring, extending the Savannah area’s natural beauty.
