Initial feedback from consumers says Baker’s Supreme – an all-natural premium frosting mix – is a hit. That’s the consensus after Imperial Sugar Company partnered with two grocery store chains to market test the new product.

In recent weeks, grocery customers have sampled the all-natural, high-grade frosting mix under two different brand names. BI-LO stores in the Southeast dished up samples under the Dixie Crystal brand, while HEB stores in Texas served the Imperial Sugar brand. The frosting mix comes in three flavors: Gourmet Chocolate, Creamy Vanilla and Classic White – and only takes a stick of butter and water to whip up.

According to Imperial Brand Manager Hyuna Lee, the sampling program provides the best opportunity to get the frosting mix into consumers’ hands and have them taste the difference. “The strategy was to get as many people as possible to taste the product. Once they tasted it, we knew they would love it.”

Darrell Gerdes, manager of new product development at Imperial, has been on hand to catch customer reactions in more than 20 HEB stores in Texas. He relates the story of how one little girl and her brother in a San Antonio store stopped by the frosting display with their parents to get a sample.

“After tasting the frosting, the little girl ran back to the display table, grabbed a box of both the chocolate and white frosting, then ran back to her mom and said: ‘Mom, you have to buy this. This is the best frosting I have ever eaten.’ Her brother also brought back two coupons for the mix, and the sale was made.”

After making her first batch of the frosting, which officially launched in September, Houston radio announcer Dana Tyson had this to say: “I have been a superstar frosting maker since I was 13 years old. I will never have to make frosting from scratch again. That frosting-in-a-box was ridiculously good. The kids all agree. It’s so easy to make. I’m completely sold.”
