First Annual Burn Foundation Golf Tournament
isc | Sep 24, 2009
In a region of America renowned for outstanding and fabled golfing events, this one deserves to be ranked near the top – the Southeastern Firefighters’ Burn Foundation 1st Annual Charity Golf Tournament held at Savannah’s Southbridge Golf Club.
The participants: 74 local golfers made up 19 teams, including 2 teams from Imperial Sugar Company. Also hitting the links: scores of volunteers from the community and the generous sponsorship support of more than 20 Savannah-area companies, restaurants and golf courses.
The goal: To raise money for the Augusta-based Southeastern Firefighters’ Burn Foundation, an organization devoted to lending support and a helping hand to the families of burn victims treated at the Joseph M. Still, Jr. Burn Center in Augusta, Ga.
Members for Imperial Sugar’s teams were chosen at random a few weeks ago via rigorous scientific method: Associates at the company’s sugar refinery at nearby Port Wentworth who wished to play dropped their names into a jar and selection was made through a drawing.
The Southeastern Firefighters’ Burn Foundation, run entirely by volunteers and contributions, provided invaluable support to families of those who were burned as a result of a tragic explosion and fire at Imperial Sugar’s refinery in February 2008 and taken to the Burn Center in Augusta for intensive treatment.
